How to Utilize Virtual Desktops in Windows 11 – Guide

Windows 11 virtual desktops let you run multiple applications side by side without having to switch between them. This makes multitasking easier and helps you focus on your work.

Windows 11 is set to release on October 5th, and will offer some new features such as better UI, built-in Android apps, and more appearance settings. Additionally, Windows 10 will be retired and will be replaced by Windows 11.

Create a virtual desktop

  1. Open the Start screen and type “virtual desktop”
  2. The virtual desktop will open and you will be able to choose which applications to use.

Click on the “Task View” icon in the taskbar and then click on the arrow to the right of the “Name” column. Now you can see all of your currently active tasks.

A new desktop has been added to your computer.

You can use the key combination Win + Ctrl + D; in that case, you’ll immediately find yourself in your new workspace. Now you can put different apps on their separate desktops. Move from one desktop to another by clicking on the “Task View” icon. (You can also move around using the familiar Alt-Tab key combination, which will take you to all the apps on one desktop and then to the apps on the next.)

Remove the desk, chair, and any other objects in the space.

To remove a virtual desktop, mouse over it and click the “X” in the upper right corner. ..

Customize your desktop

You can create a desktop that is dedicated to your work, for example. You could put all your important files on one desktop and use it as your main work space. Or you could create a separate desktop for personal use, with only the essentials on it. You can also create a custom desktop that is specifically tailored to your needs, such as one that has more space for programs and files than the default Windows 11 desktop.

CHOOSE DIFFERENT WALLPAPER

  1. Choose a virtual desktop with a different background.
  2. Change the wallpaper and/or icons on that virtual desktop.
  3. Use that virtual desktop to work on different tasks or projects.

Give your desktop a name

USE THE SAME APP ON DIFFERENT DESKTOPS

If you’re using an app on one desktop and opening it on another, you’re using a different version of that app – for example, you can use Chrome to see Twitter on one desktop and do job searches in other. (Be aware that some applications might not work that way yet – for example, when I tried to open Notion on a second desktop, my computer jumped to the desktop where it was already open.)

  1. Open the Start menu and type “cmd”
  2. Type “netstat -an”
  3. Look for the line that says “Ports: [port name]” and change it to “Protocols: [protocol name]”
  4. Save the changes and close the command prompt.
