If you are new to Android, everything might seem a bit overwhelming at first. Whether you are new to smartphones or have moved from iOS or Windows 10 MobileAndroid has a learning curve for anyone not used to the intricacies of Google mobile operating system. Fortunately, once you get the hang of Android, it’s really easy to learn even the most complex tasks. Today we will look how to update your installed apps on Android. Keeping your apps updated regularly will help protect against crashes, bugs and security holes to keep your device running fast and smoothly. Apps are regularly updated features also added, making updating your app library on Android a cinch. Some of your system apps, such as the phone dialer, or the Google suite of apps, are also updated through the Play Store, in the same way as your own user-installed apps. Plus, Android can even automatically update your apps for you, making the entire update system seamless. Let’s see how all of this happens in our guide to update apps on Android:
Open the Play Store
The Google Play Store is the equivalent of the App Store on iOS. Here you download all your apps, movies, music and books to your device. It has undergone a lot of changes over the years and each version makes the store a little easier to manage and browse. If you haven’t used the Play Store much, you might not know how to open it. Normally, new Android devices will have a Play Store icon on it home screen of your device, but you may also need to open your app drawer to get to the icon. On my tablet, the icon is in the dock of my device. Just tap the icon and the Play Store will open on the front page.
View your app updates
To view your personal apps on Android, slide your finger from the left side of your screen to the right or tap the three line icon in the top left corner of your screen. This will open the menu so you can choose from a variety of options.
My apps and games
The Updates tab on the Play Store lists all available updates for your device. You will notice that every app has a button besides that makes for a unique update. There also is a button at the top of the page that says ‘Update all’. Usually this is it button you want to use to update your apps. However, if you only have one or two apps that need an update, then you can press the ‘Update only’ button instead. This will download and install only the updates for those two apps.
What’s new in each app update? To see what’s changed, select an app by tapping it and the “What’s new?” list at the top of the app list.
Update apps automatically
To enable the option to update apps automatically, open the same slider menu as before and select settings at the bottom of the list. There are some useful settings here, but for now we’ll look at them how to make sure the option to update apps automatically is selected. The first option at the top of the menu, under General, is ‘Automatically update apps’. Touch this icon to display a pop-up. You need to make sure that ‘Automatically update apps anytime’ is selected. Google Play warns that data charges may apply, but I think the app waits pretty well for you to use Wi-Fi to update. If ever an update happens while you’re at it mobile data, you can stop updates by viewing the same Updates screen we viewed earlier.
If you want to have complete control over when and which apps are updated, you can disable automatic updates on a per-app basis by visiting the app’s Play Store listing and tapping the three-dot menu in the top right corner and “Auto-Update App.”
Google and Google Play make it really easy to update your apps quickly. This is especially helpful if you have a lot of apps and you don’t want to keep track of which ones need to be updated and which ones don’t. The Play Store also has come a long way since the days of the Android Market, where managing your app library was really difficult.
