I take screenshots of programs to show readers what they see on the screen. Windows has had the ability to take screenshots since the first PCs in the 1980s.

Cutting tool

The Snipping Tool is a tool that has been around for a while that is used to take screenshots. It can be found on the Start menu and can be easily accessed by clicking on the New button. The default cut is rectangular, but you can also create freeform, full screen and window cuts. The Snipping Tool does not automatically save your screenshots – you have to manually save them in the tool before exiting – and automatically copies your screenshots to the clipboard.

To capture your entire screen, press the Print Screen button. Your screenshot will be copied to the clipboard and saved as a file. You can open an image editor (like Microsoft Paint) and paste the screenshot into the editor. Then, you can save the file from there. Windows key + print screen

To take a screenshot on your computer, hold down the Windows key and press the Print Screen button. Your screen will dim briefly to indicate that you have just taken a screenshot, and the screenshot will be saved in the Images > Screenshots folder.

Alt + Print Screen

To take a screenshot of the active window, use the Alt + PrtScn key combination. This will capture the currently active window and copy the screenshot to the clipboard. You will need to open the screenshot in an image editor to save it.

To take a screenshot in the Game Bar, press Windows key + G. From here, you can click on the screenshot button or use the standard keyboard shortcut Windows Key + Alt + PrtScn. To set a custom keyboard shortcut for the Game Bar screenshot, go to Settings > Games > Game Bar and enable Game Bar on this settings page.

Windows logo + volume down

If you are using a Microsoft Surface device, you can take a screenshot of the entire screen using the virtual (well, virtual) buttons – similar to any other phone or tablet. To do this, press and hold the Windows logo button at the bottom of the Surface screen and press the virtual volume down button on the side of the tablet. The screen briefly dims and the screenshot is automatically saved in the Images > Screenshots folder.
