Microsoft has announced a new feature for its unified communications platform, Teams. With this new feature, customers using direct routing for their telephony will be able to make PSTN calls to Teams meetings through direct routing. Currently, the normal Teams user phone calls using Microsoft phone System and direct routing implemented through a third-party provider, such as pure IP, are routed to Teams through direct routing session edge controllers (SBC) configured in the tenant.
When a user has an Audio Conferencing license, they are able to send invitations to Teams meetings and create ad hoc meetings. Participants can also use these meetings to call themselves if they don’t want to use the Teams client. However, all incoming PSTN calls from participants using the phone numbers to dial or leave the meeting to add a new participant are routed through Microsoft and not through direct routing SBCs. This means that these calls may incur charges from Microsoft, resulting in a phone system.
