Microsoft has released a new update to its Office 365 Monthly Channel that allows users to choose where Office documents open by default. This update also includes the ability to open Excel, Word and PowerPoint documents stored on OneDrive, SharePoint or Outlook in the desktop app. Users need to take no action if they want the files to be opened in the web application; however, if users want to open Office documents in their desktop app, they can do so by following these steps:

  1. Open Microsoft 365 and sign in.
  2. Click on the three lines in the top left corner of your screen and select “My Documents.”
  3. In the “My Documents” section, you will see a list of all of your Office 365 subscriptions. If you have not added OneDrive as an office account yet, you will need to do so before continuing.
  4. In the “OneDrive” section, you will see a list of all of your Office 365 documents that are stored on OneDrive.
  5. To open a document stored on OneDrive in your desktop app, click on it and then select “Open in Desktop App.”

Steps to open files in desktop apps with Microsoft 365

In Word, Excel or PowerPoint, click on the ‘File’ tab. Click on the ‘New’ button. In the ‘File Name’ field, type a unique name for your file. In the ‘Description’ field, provide a brief description of your file. This can be something like: “This is a new file.”

There are three options located at the bottom of the colored tab: ‘options’, ‘settings’, and ‘accounts’. The first two are general settings that you can change on a per-user basis, while the third is your account’s settings.

If you have an Office app on your desktop, you can open supported hyperlinks to files in that app. This box should now be checked.

Starting in the next update to Office, any file you open from Outlook, OneDrive or SharePoint will open by default in the most recent desktop app installed on your computer. This includes both traditional desktop apps like Microsoft Word and Excel, as well as newer mobile apps like PowerPoint and Excel for iPhone. This change makes it easier to work on files with colleagues who are using different apps, and it also means that you can access your files even when you’re not connected to the internet. ..

Final Words

If you’re using a desktop app like Microsoft Word for the web, you can open files by using the File Open dialog box. If you’re using a desktop app like Microsoft Office, it’s usually easier to just open the file by pressing the File Open button in the top left corner of the window.
