Guide: Change Default Downloads Folder in MacBook

I’ve found that keeping my downloaded files clean up and organized is much easier when I download them to my desktop, which I constantly look at and then to download to the download folder that I don’t pay attention to until it gets too cluttered to find anything.

If you’re the same, it’s good to know that you can change where Safari, Firefox, and Chrome place their downloads.

How to Change the Default Download Folder on Mac

The three major Mac browsers - Safari, Chrome, and Firefox - all have a default download folder that you can change. To do this, open the Finder and select the Downloads folder. Then click on the Change Download Folder button.

Change the default download location in Safari

To open Safari and change its preferences, open the Safari app and then the Safari drop-down menu in the top left corner of your screen. Choose from the drop-down list Preferences. After the Preferences window opens, make sure you select General tab. On the General tab, you can change the “File download location” switch to any location you want. If you’re feeling really fancy, you can instead change the toggle shown in my second screenshot above to “Ask for any download,” which means you can archive anything you download right where you want it, any time again.

Change the default download location in Firefox

Firefox users start out in the same way as Safari users. That is, first launch the Firefox application and then click on the said menu (i.e. the Firefox drop-down menu) in the top left corner. Then select Preferences from the Firefox drop-down menuBelow the General tab, the option for this is front and center: it’s even labeled ‘Save files to’.Use that “Choose” button on the right, which allows you to switch your download location to another folder, or again the ‘Always ask me where to save files’ radio button above, Firefox will prompt you every time you start a download. ..

Scroll down to the “Download Location” option and select a new folder from the list. ..

You can use the “Modify” button to switch your browser’s settings so that it asks you where to put the file you’re downloading every time.

Mail stores attachments in the Downloads folder by default. If you want to be thorough, you can change this setting. ..

To change the download location for Mail, open Preferences and on the General tab, click the Download Location button.
